Travel: Anything is Possible!

 Travel Day:: September 23, 2024

Planning, anticipation, worry and finally the departure day arrives. Goodbye Sunny San Diego. Hello London!

It is possible to travel to Europe from San Diego. As I headed to my gate, I saw a flight headed to Munich and thought, humm, maybe next year?? But today I'm taking British Airway for a 10.5 hour flight direct to Heathrow. BA is a partner with Alaska airline so points can be accrued.  In premium economy one gets extra wide, comfortable seats, foot rests, leg room, a good recline, along with great food, wine, and plenty of entertainment.  I am not a sleeper on long flights so just a a bit of elevated comfort is a perfect choice for me.

This is the first time I am traveling alone for the first 5 days of my month long trip. I rationalize that I'll be fine. I can set my own pace, eat when and where I desire and immerse myself in London without any time constraints.  I had a taste of this city last year so I am happy to explore some of the places I missed last time.

This is the first time I was able to nap a little and time passed almost too quickly. Perhaps it was because my seat mate (who was traveling with her mother) was easy to talk to and we had much in common. Like me she believes in immersing in the culture, and making the most of each place visited.  We shared stories of children and travel. They will make Rome their home and take excursions from an Air B&B. When their three weeks are up, they hop on a cruise ship to Florida then a flight to San Diego.  Fourteen days of R&R and return home with little to no jet lag. A marvelous idea. A great future plan.

Because I had plenty of energy, I decided to take a train from Heathrow to Paddington station. Once there I discovered that my hotel was just one Tube station away. I was told that a taxi would not relish the short trip. My choices were to brave the Tube ( with 2 carry on suitcases. One was heavy) or hop a bus. I chose the Tube. Yes, there were stairs. No, I didn't struggle too far up them (or down them) because two men and a woman came to my rescue at each new flight of stairs..  Upper body strength, not my forte.  Yes, I could have taken a cab from Heathrow but honestly, the train is so simple. Just use a credit card, tap and go (like a pass-ticket) and you are connected to all forms of transportation.  People everywhere are friendly and helpful.  Next time I'll opt for a bus from Paddington.

I've had a bit of Chinese food, a nap and will soon attempt a good night's sleep. Tomorrow,  weather permitting,  I'll visit Oxford.  The oldest library in the world is waiting.

  1. Two carry on suitcases.... I read your Day Two blog that said you had one carry on. I thought, "who are you and what have you done with my friend Cindy?" Now I know the rest of the story. :)
